Whole House Iron Removal Filters – Eastern Shore & Anne Arundel County, MD
We install high-performance whole-house iron filters designed for the unique water chemistry of Eastern Shore and Anne Arundel County wells. Our primary systems are AIO filters using Katalox Light, Birm, and optional ozone enhancement. Every recommendation starts with a free in-home water test.
Whole House Iron Filters We Install
-
AIO with BIRM
A proven, chemical-free media effective for moderate iron levels when pH and dissolved oxygen conditions are favorable. Cost-effective and reliable for many homes with straightforward iron problems.
-
AIO with KATALOX
A high-performance catalytic media with strong capacity for iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. It works across a wider pH range, filters finer particles, and typically lasts longer than traditional media. Our most common recommendation for tougher Eastern Shore and Anne Arundel well water.
-
Ozone-Enhanced AIO
Adds ozone generation for stronger oxidation. Especially useful for higher iron, manganese, or stubborn sulfur. Provides more aggressive treatment while remaining chemical-free.
Why Iron Is So Common in Eastern Shore & Anne Arundel Wells
Private wells across Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Dorchester, Kent, Caroline, and Anne Arundel Counties frequently draw from Coastal Plain aquifers that naturally contain iron and manganese. Many also have hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor).
Common results we see:
- Dissolved iron that turns orange or red when exposed to air
- Orange/brown staining on fixtures, toilets, laundry, and appliances
- Metallic taste
- Slimy iron bacteria in some wells
- Manganese that causes black or dark staining
- Sulfur odor that often appears alongside iron
Because these wells are not treated by the city or county, the only way to stop staining and odor is proper whole-house filtration sized to your actual water chemistry.
How AIO Iron Filters Work
AIO systems are single-tank filters that use a simple, chemical-free process:
- An air pocket is maintained in the top of the tank.
- As water passes through the air pocket, dissolved iron and sulfur are oxidized.
- The oxidized particles are then trapped by the filter media.
- A regular backwash cleans the media and replenishes the air pocket.
This approach eliminates the need for chemical feed pumps or potassium permanganate in most cases.
The Media Options We Use
We match the media to your specific water test results.
Katalox Light
One of the highest-performing catalytic media available. It contains a high percentage of manganese dioxide and offers strong capacity for iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. It works across a wide pH range, filters down to very fine particles, and typically lasts 7–10 years with proper operation. Katalox is our most common recommendation for tougher Eastern Shore water.
Birm
A proven, cost-effective media for moderate iron levels when pH and dissolved oxygen conditions are favorable. It requires no chemicals but is more limited than Katalox on higher iron, manganese, or sulfur.
Ozone-Enhanced AIO Systems
Some Nelsen AIO systems include an Enhanced Oxidation Generator (ozone). Ozone provides stronger oxidation, which is helpful for higher iron, manganese, or stubborn sulfur. This option is especially useful on more challenging well water.
We will recommend the right combination based on your free water test — not a one-size-fits-all system.
Typical Contaminant Reduction Capabilities
Depending on the exact system and media:
- Iron: commonly effective up to 7–30 ppm (higher with Katalox + strong oxidation)
- Manganese: strong reduction capability
- Hydrogen sulfide (sulfur): effective reduction in properly designed systems
- Improved clarity and reduced staining throughout the home
Exact performance depends on pH, competing contaminants, and proper system sizing.
Our Iron Filter Installation Process
1. Free In-Home Water Test
We test for iron, hardness, pH, TDS, and related issues. Lab samples can be collected when needed. Our team is certified water samplers through the Maryland Department of the Environment (Cert #2907-99-028).
2. Custom System Design
Based on your results, we select the correct AIO configuration and media (Katalox, Birm, or ozone-enhanced). Pre-treatment or a softener is sometimes paired with the iron filter for complete results.
3. Professional Installation
Our licensed Master Plumber-led team installs the system on the main water line with clean, professional workmanship. Most installations are completed with minimal disruption.
4. Startup & Guidance
We test the finished system, explain how the backwash cycle works, and cover basic maintenance so you know what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What’s the difference between iron and manganese?
Iron usually causes orange/red staining, while manganese causes black or dark brown staining. Both are very common in Eastern Shore and Anne Arundel County wells and are often found together.
Can a water softener remove iron by itself?
A standard water softener can remove small amounts of iron, but it often gets overwhelmed with moderate to high iron levels. A dedicated whole house iron filter is much more effective for stubborn iron problems.
How does the iron filter actually work?
Most of our systems use air injection or specialized catalytic media to oxidize dissolved iron into solid particles, which are then trapped and removed by the filter bed.
Will the iron filter remove sulfur smell too?
Many of our iron filters can also reduce hydrogen sulfide (rotten-egg smell), especially when combined with the right media.
