Annapolis Water Treatment, Right Across the Bridge
A lot of our work is on the western shore. Annapolis and Anne Arundel County homeowners are a big part of our customer base, and our team regularly crosses the Bay Bridge for installs, service calls, and salt delivery. From our base in Queenstown, Annapolis is about a half hour away.
Lifewell is locally owned, not a franchise or a national chain. Our founders, Matt Sovero and Tyler Gilmore, test your water, design your system, and stand behind the install. That's why Annapolis customers keep recommending us.
- Education over sales. We explain your results and recommend only what you need.
- Upfront pricing. Written quotes from a printed price book, usually the same day.
- Quick installs. Most systems go in within a single day.

City Water, County Water, or a Well?
The right treatment in Annapolis depends on where your water comes from. Homes here are on one of three supplies.
| City of Annapolis | Anne Arundel County DPW | Private well | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where | Inside city limits | Much of the surrounding suburban county | Rural and waterfront areas: Mayo, Davidsonville, Crownsville, Riva, Harwood, and more |
| Who tests it | The City | The County | You do. Private wells aren't routinely tested. |
| Common complaints | Chlorine taste and smell | Chlorine taste and smell, hardness | Arsenic, salt, radium, acidic water, iron, hardness, bacteria |
| Typical treatment | Carbon filtration, reverse osmosis | Carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, softeners | Arsenic filters, acid neutralizers, softeners, RO, UV |
What's in Annapolis City Water
The City of Annapolis draws from eight wells in confined aquifers and treats the water at its own plant. Its 2025 water quality report shows a clean system with no violations:
| Detected | Result | Federal limit |
|---|---|---|
| Chlorine (disinfectant) | 0.58–1.18 ppm | 4 ppm |
| Fluoride (added) | Up to 0.98 ppm | 4 ppm |
| Trihalomethanes | Up to 4.6 ppb | 80 ppb |
| Lead (90th percentile) | Under 0.63 ppb | 15 ppb action level |
What city customers usually want
Annapolis city water is in good shape. When in-town homeowners call us, it's almost always about taste and smell: the chlorine the City keeps in the water to protect it on the way to your tap.
- Whole-home carbon filtration removes chlorine taste and smell at every faucet and shower.
- Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink gives you bottled-quality drinking water and reduces fluoride.
We'll test before recommending a softener. Many city homes don't need one.
Anne Arundel Well Water Problem Areas
If you're on a private well around Annapolis, where you live matters. The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has designated specific problem areas with special well requirements, and the Maryland Geological Survey has mapped arsenic in the county's aquifers.
| Area | Problem | What the county or state says | Treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annapolis Neck | Saltwater intrusion | New wells must be sealed into a confined aquifer screened at 270 ft or deeper | Reverse osmosis for salty drinking water |
| Annapolis/Edgewater peninsula, Mayo & Saunders Point | Arsenic and cadmium in the Aquia aquifer | Saunders Point wells must be 300 ft deep; wells over the arsenic limit must be redrilled | Whole-home arsenic filters, reverse osmosis |
| North of Route 50 | Radium, often with acidic water | New wells must meet radium and gross alpha standards | Treatment unit or deeper well; pH correction |
| Gambrills area | Nitrate | New wells must be sealed below 140 ft | Reverse osmosis |
Sources: Anne Arundel County Department of Health, Water Quality Problem Areas; Maryland Geological Survey, Report of Investigations 78.
Anne Arundel has the highest reported arsenic in Maryland's Aquia aquifer. The Maryland Geological Survey reported a high of 131 ppb in Anne Arundel County, 13 times the federal limit, and identified a separate high-arsenic area on the Mayo Peninsula. Arsenic has no taste, color, or smell. If your well is in the Aquia, a certified lab test is the only way to know.
Other Well Water Problems Around Annapolis
Acidic water
Common in Anne Arundel wells. Blue-green stains, pinhole leaks in copper, and lead leaching from plumbing.
Iron
Orange stains on fixtures and laundry. A whole-home iron filter stops them.
Hard water
Scale, spotty dishes, and short-lived water heaters. A softener fixes it.
Bacteria
A risk for older and shallow wells, and waterfront homes after flooding. UV is the chemical-free fix.
Sulfur smell
Rotten-egg odor, often worse in hot water.
PFAS
Mainly a shallow-well concern. Reverse osmosis reduces it in drinking water.

| Pricing | Often quoted after an in-home sales presentation | Written quote from a printed price book, usually same day |
| Local knowledge | Often standard packages used across many markets | Designed for Anne Arundel's aquifers, from Aquia arsenic to Annapolis Neck salt |
| Recommendation | Often leads with a softener | Only what your test shows you need, sometimes nothing |

Buying or Selling a Home With a Well?
Since October 1, 2024, Maryland law (Real Property § 10-713) requires water quality testing as a condition of selling most homes with a private well. The seller provides the results in writing before settlement, and a buyer can waive the test only in writing.
In Anne Arundel County's designated problem areas, that test can turn up arsenic, salt, or radium. We collect certified samples for buyers, sellers, and agents, and can install treatment before closing if needed.

Annapolis Water Treatment FAQs
Who installs water treatment systems in Annapolis, MD?
Lifewell Water Solutions installs and services water treatment across Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. We're a locally owned, master plumber–led team based in Queenstown, and we regularly cross the Bay Bridge for Annapolis installs, service, and salt delivery.
Do you really serve Annapolis from the Eastern Shore?
Yes. Annapolis and Anne Arundel County are a big part of our work, and Annapolis is about a half hour from our base in Queenstown. We handle installs, service calls, and salt delivery on the western shore.
Is Annapolis city water safe to drink?
The City of Annapolis' 2025 report lists no violations and very low results for lead and disinfection byproducts. Most residents who call us want to remove the chlorine taste with a carbon filter or get reverse osmosis drinking water.
Why does Annapolis water taste like chlorine?
The City adds chlorine to disinfect the water and keeps a small amount in it to protect it on the way to your tap. A whole-home carbon filter removes the taste and smell.
Is there arsenic in Anne Arundel County well water?
In some areas, yes. The County Department of Health reports arsenic and cadmium in Aquia aquifer wells on the Annapolis/Edgewater peninsula, and the Maryland Geological Survey reported Aquia arsenic as high as 131 ppb in the county, with a separate high-arsenic area on the Mayo Peninsula. A certified lab test is the only way to know.
Why does my Annapolis Neck well water taste salty?
Annapolis Neck is a county-designated saltwater intrusion area. Reverse osmosis is the usual fix for salty drinking water, and a softener won't help, since it doesn't remove salt.
Do I need a water softener in Annapolis?
Not always. Many city homes don't, and hardness varies widely among wells. We measure it during your free test and only recommend a softener if your water needs one.
How much does water treatment cost in Annapolis?
It depends on your water. A carbon filter or reverse osmosis system for city water costs much less than a multi-stage well system with arsenic and pH treatment. We start with a free in-home test, then give you a written quote from our printed price book.
Do you offer salt delivery in Annapolis?
Yes. We deliver softener salt and offer maintenance plans for homes across Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
Do you service water treatment systems you didn't install?
Yes. We repair, rebed, and maintain existing systems from other companies. Tell us the brand and what it's doing when you call.
