Bay Water in Kent Island Wells
Kent Island sits in the middle of the Chesapeake, and that affects the groundwater under it. The Maryland Geological Survey has monitored salt (chloride) in Kent Island's Aquia aquifer for years. It reports that:
- The lower Aquia is brackish along the entire bay shore.
- In the upper Aquia, chloride is elevated and increasing along the central bay shore, and some wells around Bay City and Matapeake Estates show an overall increase.
- Farther inland, about a quarter mile from the bay, the Aquia is still fresh.
If you live near the water and your well tastes salty, corrodes fixtures, or your water heater fails early, salt may be the reason.
How we treat salty well water
Salt dissolves completely in water, so most filters won't touch it, and a water softener actually adds a little sodium. The fix for drinking water is reverse osmosis, which removes most dissolved salts at the kitchen sink.
We start by testing your total dissolved solids during the free in-home test. If they're high, we can send a sample to a certified lab for chloride and sodium so you know exactly what you're dealing with.
Bay-shore homes with brackish wells sometimes need more than treatment. We'll tell you honestly if your well itself is the problem.
Stevensville County Water: What's in It
The Queen Anne's County Sanitary District runs the Stevensville water system, which has been connected to the Chester system since 2010. Unlike most Shore towns, it draws from four different aquifers, so the water in your tap depends partly on which plant serves your neighborhood.

What it means for your home
In that report, detected results such as radium (2.6 pCi/L against a 5 pCi/L limit) were below federal limits, and nitrate wasn't detected. The county also notes that naturally occurring iron can cause periodic brown water, and the water is chlorinated.

Buying or Selling a Home on Kent Island?
Since October 1, 2024, Maryland law (Real Property § 10-713) requires water quality testing as a condition of selling most homes with a private well. The seller provides the results in writing before settlement, and a buyer can waive the test only in writing.
