Why Sump Pumps Matter Here
Much of the Eastern Shore and the Anne Arundel shoreline sits only a few feet above sea level, with high groundwater that rises fast in heavy rain. Waterfront and low-lying homes in Dorchester, on Kent Island, along Talbot's necks, and in Anne Arundel waterfront communities see it most.
The storms that raise the water, from nor'easters to summer thunderstorms and tropical systems, are the same ones that cut the power. A sump pump without backup stops exactly when you need it.
On a private well? Skip the water-powered backup. Water-powered backup pumps run on household water pressure. On a well, that pressure disappears when the power goes out, because your well pump stops too. Well homes need a battery backup or a generator.
Signs Your Sump Pump Needs Replacing
It runs constantly
A stuck float switch or a failed check valve keeps the pump cycling and wears it out.
It doesn't run when the pit fills
A failed motor or switch is an emergency waiting for the next storm.
Loud grinding or rattling
Worn bearings or a damaged impeller usually mean the end is near.
Rust or debris in the pit
Corrosion and silt clog the intake and shorten pump life.
It's 7 to 10 years old
Most pumps wear out in this range. Replacing ahead of storm season beats a flooded floor.
You have no backup
If the power goes out and you have no battery backup, you have no protection.
Sump Pump Options
| Option | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Submersible pump | Sits in the pit, quieter and more powerful | Most basements and crawl space pits |
| Pedestal pump | Motor sits above the pit, easy to service | Small or narrow pits |
| Battery backup pump | Takes over automatically when power fails or the main pump can't keep up | Every home, especially on a well |
| High-water alarm | Sounds before water overflows the pit | Every home |
Installed Right
- Correct pump size for how fast your pit fills
- Check valve so discharged water doesn't flow back into the pit
- Discharge routed away from your foundation, never into the sewer line
- Battery backup and alarm on a separate float
- Sealed lid to keep moisture and odors out of crawl spaces and basements
If you have a generator, we'll make sure your sump pump is on a circuit it covers.

Sump Pump FAQs
How long does a sump pump last?
Most last about 7 to 10 years, less if they run often. Test yours by pouring a bucket of water into the pit a few times a year.
Do I need a battery backup sump pump?
If flooding would damage your home, yes. Storms that raise groundwater are often the same ones that knock out power, and a primary pump can't run without electricity.
Will a water-powered backup work on a well?
No. Water-powered backups need water pressure, and on a well that pressure is gone when the power goes out. Well homes need a battery backup or a generator.
Can my sump pump drain into my sewer or septic system?
No. Sump water should discharge outside, away from your foundation. Sending it into a sewer or septic system is not allowed in most areas and can overload a septic system.
Do you install sump pumps in crawl spaces?
Yes. Many Shore homes have crawl spaces instead of basements, and a crawl space sump pump is often the best way to keep groundwater out.
