How UV Disinfection Works
Water flows through a stainless steel chamber around a UV-C lamp. The light scrambles the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa so they can't reproduce or make you sick. VIQUA rates its systems to inactivate 99.99% of harmful microorganisms, including E. coli and coliform bacteria.

Pre-Treatment: Why UV Needs Clean Water
UV only works if the light reaches the water. Iron, hardness, and sediment coat the quartz sleeve around the lamp and cast shadows where bacteria can slip through. VIQUA's specs call for water with:

We test before we install
Plenty of Eastern Shore wells have iron or hardness above those limits. That's why every UV we install starts with a free water test.
If your water needs pre-treatment, we install it ahead of the UV, usually a sediment filter at minimum. We won't install a UV where it can't do its job.
Who Needs a UV System?
Positive coliform or E. coli test
After the well is shock chlorinated and retested, UV gives continuous protection so bacteria don't come back.
Shallow or older wells
Shallow wells, older wells, and wells with worn caps are more exposed to surface water and runoff.
Waterfront and flood-prone homes
Flooding and storm surge can push surface water into a well. UV is a safeguard for low-lying homes.
Infants, elders, or health concerns
Households with vulnerable family members often want the extra protection, even with a clean test.
Buying or selling a home
Maryland requires well water testing at sale. A bacteria failure can hold up closing, and UV is often the fix.

What UV Doesn't Do

UV maintenance
- Lamp: replace every 12 months. The lamp still glows after its rated life but loses strength.
- Quartz sleeve: clean at each lamp change.
- Sediment filter: change as needed, often every 3 to 6 months on wells.
- Power: keep it plugged in. A UV that's off isn't protecting you.

Our UV Installation Process
- Free in-home water test. We check iron, hardness, pH, and sediment, and collect a certified lab sample for bacteria if you need one.
- Sizing and written quote. We size the UV to your peak flow and add any pre-treatment it needs, with a written quote, usually the same day.
- Installation. Our master plumber–led team installs the UV and filters where water enters your home, with a bypass for service.
- Disinfect the plumbing. UV protects water going forward, so after a bacteria problem we sanitize the lines downstream.
- Retest and maintain. We can retest to confirm results and handle yearly lamp changes.

UV Disinfection FAQs
How effective is a UV water disinfection system?
A properly sized and maintained VIQUA system is rated to inactivate 99.99% of harmful bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, including E. coli and coliform. It depends on clean water reaching the lamp, which is why pre-treatment matters.
What size UV system do I need?
It's based on your home's peak flow. The VIQUA VH200 handles up to 9 gpm at VIQUA's standard dose and fits most homes. The VH410 handles up to 18 gpm for larger homes. We size it during your free water test.
Do I need a filter before my UV light?
Usually, yes. VIQUA requires iron under 0.3 ppm, hardness under 7 grains, and tannins under 0.1 ppm. Most wells need at least a sediment filter, and many need a softener or iron filter too.
Will UV fix a positive coliform test?
It protects against bacteria going forward. We usually shock chlorinate the well, sanitize the plumbing, install the UV, and retest. If the well has a structural problem like a damaged cap, that should be fixed too.
How often do I need to replace the UV bulb?
Every 12 months. VIQUA lamps are rated for 9,000 hours, and the system displays remaining lamp life and alerts you when it's time.
Does UV change the taste or smell of my water?
No. UV adds nothing to the water and doesn't change its taste, smell, or pH.
Do I still need a softener or filter if I install UV?
If you have hardness, iron, sulfur, or other contaminants, yes. UV only disinfects. It doesn't remove minerals, metals, or chemicals.
Does UV work on city water?
City water is already disinfected with chlorine, so most city homes don't need UV. It's mainly for private wells.
What happens if the power goes out?
The UV stops disinfecting while it's off. After an outage, run your water for a few minutes once the lamp is back on. If you're concerned, we can talk about a backup option.
Do you service UV systems you didn't install?
Yes. We replace lamps and sleeves, troubleshoot alarms, and service UV systems from other brands and installers.
